Weather
It actually happened rather by accident. I spent some time reading about
thunderstorms, I don't remember where... probably off of the Weather Channel's
homepage... and I got hooked. My curiosity is something close to insatiable,
and I'm afraid for a while I got rather focused on the weather. I decided to
learn as much as I conveniently could, and I discovered that there's a lot
of convenient information available to one with an internet connection, as
you've no doubt deduced by now.

Programming
I enjoy programming. I admit that it's an odd thing to enjoy, but there you go. I started
when I was six years old writing in GWBASIC on a Tandy 1000. It only got worse. By the
time I completed college I could program in all of the BASIC flavors (including Visual Basic
2.0!), as well as Pascal, C, C++, and Fortran. These days I write in whatever is in use where
I work. I've recently picked up some PHP/MySQL skills by writing some applications
using those technologies. At this point, tacking on a new language/syntax is fairly easy.

Space
Our universe fascinates me. I find myself continually amazed at what's being discovered
about our cosmos. Some discoveries are taking place (relatively) close to home, such as
those continually being uncovered on Mars. Other discoveries stretch to the very edge
of the universe as we know it, as in the Hubble Deep Field surveys. Our universe, from
the micro to the macro is an amazingly complex and beautiful place. We still have so much
left to learn.

Flying
I like to fly. Preferrably real airplanes (or helicopters, I'm not picky). There's
something about that amazing sense of freedom that you get when you lift free of
the ground that is just magical to me. As I was growing up, I knew that I would be
one of two things... a programmer, or a pilot. As things turned out, the programmer
side of me won, but that's mainly just because a home computer is a heckuva lot cheaper
than a private aircraft and a pilot's license. Since I can't fly the real thing though,
I do spend a bit of time flying flight
simulators instead.

Homebrewing Beer
I like beer. I'm not sure what it is that I like more about beer
than other drinks. It's not just the alcohol, really. There are
many other alcoholic beverages that are more potent and "effective".
But beer has caught my fancy, and my tastes, and I have begun to
brew my own beer. I'm sure
there are worse hobbies, and this one allows me to experiment with
one of my favorite beverages. There are actually whole
communities built up around
homebrewing online, as well as many clubs in almost every city.

Kathy Fisher
One day I was browsing the music selection available on mp3.com
when I ran across an artist that has become one of my all-time favorites. I've always been
a big fan of soulful female vocals found in such artists as Alanis Morrisette, Sheryl Crow,
the Indigo Girls, and the like. Kathy Fisher, the artist I discovered on mp3.com
embodies the ultimate soulful female vocal to me. One great description of Fisher's
voice was "It's like a hot rock wrapped in velvet." What can I say? I'm a fan.

Neverwinter Nights
A new online game is in development that promises to change (yet again) the face of
online role playing games. Bioware's Neverwinter Nights aims to re-capture the
experience of pen and paper role playing games, and bring them to our computers.
While their offering has some admittedly spectacular graphics, it is the gameplay on
which they've focused, and if this game lives up to their plans, then it will be one
of the best computer games to be released this decade. I'm looking forward to it.
